GrenacheThe 2023 Ben Murray Marananga Grenache is the product of a season that was cooler and slower than previous harvests. This led to the slow and steady development of flavour and elegant complexity. Ben Murray has for many years sourced grapes from predominantly Marananga Vineyards in the western ridge area of the Barossa Valley with this vintage Grenache being sourced from a single old vineyard aged approximately 108 years at harvest. Grenache is renowned in the Barossa region as a variety suited very well to the conditions. The vines produced ripe fruit in late March, which is hand harvested at flavour ripeness, destemmed gently with 20% stalks returned to the fruit for stabilisation and structural elements, wild yeast fermented in open fermenters, delistaged twice daily, in small fermenters until the ferment was complete, fermenting to dryness, the wine was left in contact with the must for an additional few days. Pressed to tank then and racked directly to French oak barrels for maturation for 14 months. Racked from barrel and prepared for bottling the resulting wine is a great example of the popular style. Colour: Deep garnets to a brooding dark core, however the rim is redolent of bright reds. Aroma: Lifted dark cherries and spices over a backbone French oak influences Palate: A rich palate, well structured and drying with natural tannins driving the lifted spicy fruits. Finishes quite long and opulent.. Alc: 14% Ph: 3.53 TA: 5.93g/l

Ben Murray Wines
View wineryWho is Ben Murray? In truth, Ben Murray is not one person, but two very passionate wine-lovers. Like all great partnerships, it started with a common interest. For Daniel Benjamin Eggleton and Craig Murray Thompson, that interest happened to be a good drop of wine. They dreamed of one day crafting premium small-batch wines made with elegance and texture, and with layers of stories and experience encased within the bottle. Ben Murray became a second life; a return home, after being out in the world alone, to do it their own way. Daniel “Ben” Eggleton is the winemaker, the one pair of hands that nurtures the wine from start to finish. He has over 25 Australian vintages under his belt, from large acclaimed companies to his own boutique wineries, as well as a vintage in Germany and decades of work in the wine industry in the USA and France. Dan is focussed on creating wines that taste of their place, that offer value and generosity, and maintain the Barossa Valley’s reputation for premium quality. Making (and drinking!) a quality wine doesn’t have to be expensive, fancy or full of bells and whistles. Tending the land in harmony with the environment and letting the grapes speak for themselves is all it should take to create a characterful wine.
